Skylights Must Have Adequate Ventilation

Adequate ventilation is one of the issues that are related to the installation of skylights – this issue must be addressed properly. For the skylights to be energy-efficient and functional there should be a proper ventilation system upon installation. The installation of skylights must be correctly done to maintain a continuous airflow between and around the area surrounding the roof opening. No matter how long a winter season may last, one solution may be to form icicles along the edges of the roof and skylight frames to form the build-up of ice dams thereby causing water build-up and penetrating into the room through the roof and to the exterior walls. To annul this, an indentation can be cut at the corners of the roof beam on both sides of the skylights. This is done to allow free movement of air from the intake vents to the exhaust outlets. But in case ice is formed during the winter, you can install interior storm panels to reduce heat loss and eliminate drafts. Every high ceiling will also require similar uninterrupted and continuous ventilation. There should also air barriers and ridge outlets to provide a continuous air flow of air from the lower part of the room to the peak of the roofing structure.

Infiltration and Condensation

The installation of skylights is not only for a good source of natural light, dramatic views, or necessary ventilation; they are also an unwanted source of outside air infiltration and condensation. It is better first to consider these issues when skylights are installed. A well-installed skylight will be resistant to condensation but can be a nuisance without proper installation. There may also be leaking of air through the frame and the glazing due to improper installation. There must be proper care during the installation process to prevent this from happening. The installation of skylights may alleviate depression, save energy, promote work efficiency, and create a healthy environment.
